Purple ornamental oregano is a subshrub with small, round aromatic leaves.
In late summer, it produces showy spikes of tiny pink flowers with reddish-purple bracts. The bracts last for longer than the flowers, making the plant quite eye-catching late into the growing season. This plant has good deer resistance.
Purple ornamental oregano has been a good perennial flower at the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden. The reddish-purple flower spikes are strikingly beautiful. In wetter years, the stems flop outward from the center.
In early spring, cut the old growth to ground level.
