Dwarf blue rabbitbrush is a very good choice where you want a small, tidy, flowering shrub that will tolerate low water conditions. It grows as a compact mound of silver-blue linear leaves for most of the summer. In late summer, golden yellow flower clusters cover the plant.
This is a perfect small, low-maintenance shrub for hot, dry conditions. One of it's best features is that it grows as a tidy mound all summer, then blooms when most flowers have faded. As long as it's pruned before the growing season begins, it has been a great performer at the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden.
In late winter, cut off one-half the height of the original stems to remove last year's brown flower clusters. If the plant has become scraggly or too irregular in shape, you can also cut all the stems to ground level. The plant will regrow new branches from the crown.
