Alpine currant is a compact, multi-stemmed shrub with a rounded shape. One of its best qualities is its small, rich green leaves.
The leaves and narrow branches allow alpine currant can be used nice background plant or as a hedge plant that requires little shearing. Most plants found in the nursery trade are male plants, which will not produce seeds. Open clusters of bell-shaped greenish yellow flowers appear in spring only on female plants.
Alpine currant has been growing at the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden in a shady location. It has beautiful green leaves and a dense branching habit. It can make a good choice for hedges, screening or as a background plant.
Prune occasionally to achieve desired shape.
